From Oven to Online: A Collaborative Showcase of Baking & Digital Innovation
We opened our doors on April 9 and 11 and welcomed our Humber community to our end of semester showcase, where students of the BUS 2504 Web Development program presented their final work in gallery format representing 16 booths over the two days.
This multidisciplinary project is a collaboration between the two courses at the Longo Faculty of Business:
- BAKE 253 Bakery Management and Entrepreneurship, taught by Chef Alastair Gray, to students of the Baking and Pastry Arts Management program
- BUS 2504 Web Development course, taught by Hanadi Alnawab, to students of the Digital Business Management & Fashion Management BComm programs
In Chef Gray’s BAKE 253 class, students craft their business plans to open a bakeshop/café in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), complete with a delectable menu and a signature item that can be sold at their local Farmer’s Market and, potentially, the prestigious Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) scheduled for Aug 16 – Sept 2, 2024.
Meanwhile, the BUS 2504 class bring their digital expertise to the table by developing the bakers’ online presence using WordPress and utilizing AI tools to create content and multimedia for the bakers. Learn more about our experience using AI to create content for the bakers’ websites.
The final presentations for the BUS 2504 course took place in a gallery format during week 13, and the event was open to the Humber community. Each booth at the showcase featured the Digital Business team’s media agency, as well as their client: the baker’s business idea & signature item, along with website and promotional materials designed to support the bakers’ application to the CNE.
The students particularly enjoyed sharing their work with external guests and the Humber community in this gallery style event, while our guests enjoyed samples of baked products representing the bakers’ signature items. The Web Development students discussed the challenges they faced using AI tools to develop content, as well as lessons learned working with their clients; students of the Bakery Management and Entrepreneurship course.
This was a great experience and we look forward to another round of delicious collaborations with Chef Gray and his students next Winter!
